Diabase Lake late fall return trip

Short trip into Diabase Lake to check on a plant. I wanted to get one of the seed heads to try and plant some. It's called Virgin's Bower (Clematis virginiana). They call the seed head Old man's beard. Took a picture of the reflection of the pines on the cliff.

More snow today

Cold front came in overnight and stayed all day. Late this afternoon heavy wet snow falling. Starting to look like winter is coming.
Out to check on the horse loggers at Long Point missed them yesterday but found some of their trails hauling out the logs. They are doing some selective cutting of Jack Pine.

Hunting and Picture taking Duncan Lake Dam

Out this afternoon for some shooting, camera and gun. Panorama of the Duncan Lake Dam (click of the picture) which holds back water for Ontario Hydro. A plaque on the side of the water control section says it was built in 1966. On the hunting side a good day with 4 ruffed grouse.

Bird hunting and fall pics

Jeremy and the boys came up for the weekend and besides eating and target shooting we headed out for some bird hunting. The birds won 2-1. Lots of colours still around with British Soldier lichen, tamaracks, some Jack Pine and a cloudy day over Porphyry Lake.

Fall at Hedlund Marsh

Out to the marsh last week just before the moose hunters were on the loose. On the south side of the road there is a large rockoutcrop that takes you down the marsh. The creek runs on one side and the marsh is on the other as you go south. Today I went down to the end and came back on the creek side. All sorts of plants in their last gasp of the season. The mushrooms were everywhere under the spruce and balsam. On the rocks, ferns and wintergreen with bright red berries. Further down the outcrop a young beaver that didn't make it through the summer.

Sign sign everywhere a sign - Blocking out the scenery breaking my mind

With all the talk of the drilling west of Duncan Lake I went out to see what was going on. Along the road for a few kilometers every road has a sign if it's not the mining companys having a pissing contest on who has the best sign it's the Keep out and NO hunting signs. Personally I wish they were several 100 kilometers further away. Traffic through the town has increased and very few obey any speed limits that are posted. I am worried this town will never be the same if a mine starts operating, sure this was a mining town but not the 21st century kind of mining like they do now.
