Putting up a duck nesting box

Out this AM putting up a Goldeneye nesting box. The Gowganda Fish and Game Association had about 15 made by Ed Barnstaple. The best time to put them up is in the spring just before the ice gets poor. Some were put on Gowganda Lake, Mosher Lake and some on Firth Lake. Ed asked if I would like to put one in Diabase Lake and thats what I did this morning. These boxes are used by ducks that nest in tree cavities, when there is a shortage of cavities along the edges of rivers and lakes the nesting boxes take up the slack. Three species nest in tree cavities around here, Goldeneye, Wood ducks and Hooded Mergansers. The Goldeneye has a bigger nest box than the Wood Duck.
I will monitor some of these over the spring and hopefully get some pics.

You're doing a great job. We've some Goldeneye nesting boxes around our lake house but I think they are getting old and should also be replaced by new ones.

Goldeneye is a beautiful name for that duck.
