Short trip to town this AM

Off shopping in New Liskeard.....ptui.
Back early and went back up to the tower hill. Last time it started to rain to hard, this time cloudy but managable.
Took some pics with the telephoto of a few houses around the lake.
Found this lichen up on the top of the hill near the tower, I belive it may be Powdered funnel cladonia.

Everett Lake Rd.

Short trip up the Everett Lake Rd and picture of Miller Creek. Still lots of flow here.
The purpose of today's jaunt was to check out the North tower, a truck with a trailer was seen going up towards the tower about 10 days ago. Well it looks as though some action has finally started, this is either the cell phone tower or our hi-speed internet or both. Either way it is about time.
The area has been cleared and stakes are in to place for the guy wires, a trailer has the anchors and reinforcing rod etc. for the tower. Hopefully work will continue before the snow starts. The picture is the old tower, owned by Northern Telephone.
Tonight's sunset was great, red skys at night sailors delight. Tomorrow should be a great day.
We have a winner in the name the fungus contest in the last post, Gert Trudel has found and identified it as Orange Peel. A common cup fungi; which occurs on disturbed soil at the edges of roads in summer and fall. It's real name (Aleuria aurantia) for those who wish to follow up on this find. It was found in fact in the middle of the road.

A walk on the Mann Ridge Road

Went out for a short walk the other day armed with camera that is. Everytime I have been out in the bush since the grouse season started I have seen birds. Lucky birds.
Still quite a bit of colour in the bush just not quite so startling. If you keep your eyes on the ground you may see a fungus like this, will try to figure out it's name.
The green leafy bush is Sweet Fern, rub it in your hands and smell, very nice. A Red Maple probably at it's darkest before it gives it up. No chlorophyl left in these leaves.
On the way home smoke coming from the south of the lake, fortunately there is a good breeze and it will miss us, not like the other day.

Frosty in the AM and smokey in the PM

Early this AM it was good and frosty, took a few pics of the Lilacs with the sun just coming up. Beautiful day turned to smokey day around 1:00 PM, I guess they were burning some of the brush piles in the cutovers because it was smokey the rest of the day. Took a shot out the window as the sun went down.

Fall ATV trip

A great day for the fall ATV trip, cool, cloudy, light mist turning to rain and warm sun all in one trip. Our goal this fall was to check out Campbell Lake which is NE of Halliday Lake in the Grassy River area. We were looking for a trail to bridge the gap to get to Matachewan.
We met at the old MTO yard on the west side of Gowganda, 10 riders showed up, Brice, Boyd, Derick, Cliff (Butch), Ray, Ed, Jim, Paul, Gary, and you know. We headed out to the north power line at Hydro Creek unloaded and away we went. The hunters bagged a few grouse on the way up, some were fortunate enough to get away before the guns were drawn.
Stopped for a break part way up where Ed bought out some great cinnamon rolls that Fay had made for the bunch of us. Thanks a lot Fay.
Made our way to a trail that looked like it would go to Campbell Lake and started down it. Further in it became quite boggy, I had a first hand view of this as Paul's rear tire disappeared and the machine started tipping over. Paul held on to the bars or he would of fell in. I was a bit slow in the uptake enjoying his plight when I remembered I should go and help him straighten out. Just behind where he got stuck we were at Campbell Lk.
We had some trouble turning in the narrow trail but finally got back to the trail head and had lunch along with the required group photo.
We tried several trails to try and get around Campbell Lake but came up blank. On the other side of the lake is the road that goes to Matachewan. Anyway we tried.
By now it was getting on and we started to head back home, stopped for another break on the bridge near Ferris Lake.
Returned to the trucks around 4 PM said our goodbyes and will start trying to figure out something for next springs trip.
A great day all round and good to see so many come out. The more there are the better it gets, we all need to get out and see some more of this great area we live in.

Snow flurries today
Went to town again today to pick up a part for the window I broke back in June. It finally came in so I went to Earlton to pick it up. Rained most of the time I was in town when I got home it started to change to flurries. Temps are dropping too.
No pics for the next little while although we have an ATV trip planned for Saturday going up into the Grassy River area and checking out Campbell Lake. Will be bringing the camera of course.

A taste of things to come

Today was quite a bit cooler than yesterday, and the forecast is predicting snow flurries for the end of the week.
Spent some time working across the street, hoping to have the front finished off before they come up for Thanksgiving.
I had been looking for some Mountain Ash berries this year and finally found a good bunch, they were starting to dry and I suspect some fermenting going on too. There were several Robins around this bunch of berries and they wouldn't go away. As I was taking the pictures they were trying to land right beside me. Everytime I tried to get a shot they were off again.

Change in temperature

A little cooler today, more like what it should be like. Got some nice pine scraps from Gord Bowen at Longpoint Lodge to do the inside window trim. Thanks Gord.
More pics from the Hedlund area both north and south of the road. Took some pics under some thick jack pine and spruce cover with the sun shining down onto the moss and other old stuff.

Still summer/fall

The windows, ah the windows are finished on time. The last 2 in the porch are in and all the panelling put back on the walls.
The next step is drywalling the walls inside and insulating, this will be left until sometime in November. October is wood month, hunting and ATVing, maybe even some fishing.
As far as work lots to do across the road, when the temperature is cooler.
Out yesterday on the Spear Lake Rd taking in some of the fall colours. The wind and rain has held off all this week and the colours are terrific, some of the best I've seen in some time. Tomorrow calls for chance of rain and cooler so I suspect they will start to drop, the leaves that is.
Leaving the pictures on the top of the post so that they can be clicked on for a larger picture.

It's finally summer
These are always the best days of the year, clear skies, cool nights and leaves starting to change. Unfortunately no pictures yet.
Trying to get all the windows in by the end of this week, I've only had them since the end of April. You can see where my priorities are. After todays window there is just one left and it's in the porch so I have no excuse for weather or time of day.
Off to town tomorrow my favorite job. NOT!

Last day of summer

Started off this morning helping fix the boat launch with Paul, Ray Clifford, Ed Barnstaple and George Wilson. It needed a new wooden beam at the water end of the launch. All done in about an hour.
After this it was pancakes at Paul and Gert's don't think I have eaten so many for two reasons, they were good and trying to keep up with Paul. Great lunch Gert.
Next was to move the dock to the river where they are stored for the winter. They are safe there because of the current in the river the ice doesn't do as much damage.
Today was one of those almost fall days that you can't get enough of.

Working around the house
Lots of chores done around the house, getting set for the cold weather. Got the chimney cleaned and changed the flue pipes on the wood furnace.
Got all the camping equipment dry and put away, sorry to see them go so soon. Next year I will start earlier.
Frost warning tonight and the sky is full of stars.

Finally
Back to real time again. Today very windy, got the fourth window trimmed after putting it in yesterday. Thanks again for the help Paul.
Tonight out to Ruth and Lauch's for supper, as usual Ruth outdid herself again. The Eric and Shelly Bengston were there too. They are leaving for home tomorrow morning.
Hopefully will get out for pics in the next couple of days.
