Back from Sudbury

Not much warmer in Sudbury as it was in Gowganda. Low night temperatures with slow rising day temps and winds make for cold days, kripes it's the end of March. Not a lot of pic taking these days but a few taken remotely with my camera right at the feeder. The first bird is a pine siskin. This year between the Redpolls, Siskins and Grosbeaks they have eaten about 200 lbs of black sunflower seeds.

Into town today

As you know I dislike going to town, it takes more time driving to than the shopping. I usually only make the trip every two weeks if I could get away with it would be once a month. Anyway these pictures are just west of New Liskeard on Highway 65 and is a huge outcrop right next to the clay belt. It's called Hooper's Hill or I have heard it called Triangle Hill, there is a hiking path to the top that should yield some good pics one day.

Feels like spring finally

This AM sun very bright and you could feel the heat. During the day it got warm enough to melt quite a bit of the driveway. The snow is going down quickly, tomorrow it will rain that will knock the snow down.
I spent the day doing more drywall, the ceiling is finished and all the walls are up.This is all I can do for now. Time for the mudding and sanding.
Took a few pics down by the store and one of the new toy in town the new trail groomer said to cost over $150,ooo. To bad the season was too short and a lack of snow, maybe next year.

Down the highway again

Out for some pics of the snowy landscape. Nice to see the fresh fallen snow with no tracks through it. When this all melts it will be good for the lakes and forests, last year we had very dry conditions in the spring. Click on the top one for a panorama view.

More snow

Yesterday another 25+cm of snow, lots of snowblowing and again this morning. In the last three days there has been over 45cm if not more of heavy snow. That's Wayne Durling wrangling the snowblower. Tonight it will go to -11C. This load of snow will start to make the lakes slushy.

Morning surprise

Surprise, surprise another 12+cm upon waking this AM. Rest of the day warm and wet with more flurries/rain to come.

New cut east of town

Walked into a new cut just east of town, the start of the road is one from a cut years ago and they have extended it to just short of Stumpy lake. This will only be a winter haul road and they will be closing it up with berms etc. It also goes through quite a few wet spots too. The cut starts about 3km down from the highway. Lots of wood cut ready to haul before the road breaks up. I never made all the way to the end of the road so they must be still cutting further down. Couple of pics of the cut area and a delimber.

Not much going on

Quiet today, bit of lite snow in the AM and cloudy most of the rest of the day with a cool nip in the wind. Over to the curling rink and the firehall today to clean up some snow. Thought I'd take a pic of both.

The winds of March coming in like a lion

Finally got the drywall on behind the stairs not a fun job. All that is left is the short ceiling sections and that will be it for a while. Out this AM for a trek into Miller Lake on the snowmobile trail. Staying out of the very strong south wind you can sort of feel the heat in the sun if you are out of the wind. Couple of pics walking in, one on the lake east of the landing and another old car which I haven't seen before probably watching the trail while ATVing or the brush and leaves that would cover it in the summer. I believe it is a 37 Plymouth 4 door. Notice the rear door is a suicide door. I leave this open to the old car experts to tell me differently.

First fishing trip

Last evening the forecast said it would be about -2C today, it went down to -20C overnite. I waited until about 10:00am this AM and it was begining to warm up so off I went. Within 15 minutes a couple of small pike which I released. After that it was all downhill the wind came up the shadows moved in and the temp. dropped. I headed home about 2:00pm. This is the earliest I have iced fished in this lake, I think I will wait until my usual time about mid March when you can actually feel the sun. I'm sure the fish will be on the move then too.

Walking Spear Lake Rd

Rushed to get work done in the house this AM so I could get out after lunch. Great day sunny and warmer. Couple of pics along the way.

Walking on Everett Lake Rd

In the house too long, out to the Everett Lake Rd for a walk. I figured it would be out of the wind but it still seem to find me which ever way I moved. Just a couple of pics along the way.

Warm, Melting, Rain, Windy, Cold, Ice

Well after a few days of warmth we are right back where we were with cold temps, wind and lots of it. After all the melting there is alot of bad ice around, not to good for walking around and the snow has just got crusty. The pic in front of my doorway is an example of what is everywhere.
Well I finally got my new computer after they said they couldn't find what was going on with the old one. We struck a deal and voila a new updated computer with all the bells and whistles. I'm still putting programs and data in from the old one and getting used to it.

Windy and snowing again

This AM the wind was blowing the snow just about as hard as it could, some drifting right up the garage door. Overall there's probably another 10cm easily. By 10:00am or so the sun started to shine and it was crisp and clear. One of those days where you had to squint to see. Just a couple of pics around the yard.

Lots of snow this AM

Finally in turns warmer and down comes the snow close to 18-20 cm. This probably brings the total snow close to 45 cm. Time to get out for a short snowshoe after blowing the snow out of the driveway. Up to the beaver pond on the Bouche cut road and couple of pics of winter (not a mallow as ML points out it is an Evening Primrose, thank you ML) and cattails.

More pics from Diabase Lake

Just a couple more from Diabase. A dead Jack Pine full of cones just waiting for a fire so the cones will open up and two sets of snowshoe tracks one from the Snowshoe Hare and one from a snowshoe I suspect.

Wednesday, February 9, 2011

Out for a quick snowshoe

A short trip into Diabase Lake, keeping out of the wind most of the way. Snow level has come up but still just enough. Sun finally showed and took a few pics.

More tearing down

Some more tearing apart of the kitchen, going to be fun putting new drywall behind the stairs.

Finally a great idea for carrying your camera

In this picture you can see my new camera vest, it does away with the heavy camera strap around your neck. It also does away with it jumping all over the place and whacking you on the chest while hiking.
The vest fits over your shoulders, and a strap around the bottom. The camera has a button that slides into the grove on the vest. You put the camera in and out at right angles and the rest of the time it locks the camera to the vest. This is made by Cotton Carrier a company in British Coloumbia. The site will show you better how it works. It will work great in a canoe or while hiking, skiing or snowshoeing.
